Sachin Dev Duggal bootstrapped Engineer.ai

Sachin Dev Duggal is a serial entrepreneur building a Human-Assisted AI that empowers everyone to build & operate technology. He has bootstrapped Engineer.ai since 2012, which was created with the belief that everyone should be able to build their ideas without needing to code and that any idea can be made into a reality without wastage of time, money or resources.

He holds a degree in B. Eng from Imperial College London and a degree in Entrepreneurial Master's Program from MIT. He is an Information Systems Engineer with specialization in Mandarin, Finance, Distributed Systems, Software Engineering, Computational Maths and Operations research with Game Theory.

At the age of 14, Sachin Duggal ended up accidentally breaking his mother's computer. Afraid of her reaction, he researched relentlessly until he put the system back together to perfect form. One thing led to another and he established a small PC business at the age of 14.

In the following years, Sachin Dev Duggal ventured into software and at the age of 17, joining Deutsche Bank as their youngest employee ever and continued to work there for 5 years.

He's founded Shoto - a photo and video service that brings together all digital memories under one roof, including the ones missed out - using AI and Facial Recognition.

Sachin Duggal took his last company Nivio (one of the pioneers of the Cloud in 2004) to $100m in value before exiting. Nivio was a pioneer in the Cloud in the mid 2000s that let users stream Windows from the Cloud in a browser and included an app store that let you rent software from Adobe, Corel, and Microsoft.

What is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial Intelligence is one of the emerging technologies that try to simulate human reasoning in AI systems. Researchers have made significant strides in weak AI systems, while they have only made a marginal mark in strong AI systems.

Most of us have used Siri, Google Assistant, Cortana, or even Bixby at some point in our lives. What are they? They are our digital personal assistants. They help us find useful information when we ask for it using our voice; we can say ‘Hey Siri, show me the closest fast-food restaurant’ or ‘Who is the 21st President of the United States?’, and the assistant will respond with the relevant information by either going through your phone or searching on the web. This is a simple example of Artificial Intelligence!

How does Artificial Intelligence work?

Computers are good at following processes, i.e., sequences of steps to execute a task. If we give a computer steps to execute a task, it should easily be able to complete it. The steps are nothing but algorithms. An algorithm can be as simple as printing two numbers or as difficult as predicting who will win elections in the coming year!

So, how can we accomplish this?

Let’s take an example of predicting the weather forecast for 2020.

First of all, what we need is a lot of data! Let’s take the data from 2006 to 2019.

Now, we will divide this data in an 80:20 ratio. 80 percent of the data is going to be our labeled data, and the rest 20 percent will be our test data. Thus, we have the output for the entire 100 percent of the data that has been acquired from 2006 to 2019.

What happens once we collect the data? We will feed the labeled data, i.e., 80 percent of train data, into the machine. Here, the algorithm is learning from the data which has been fed into it.

Next, we need to test the algorithm. Here, we feed the test data, i.e., the remaining 20 percent of the data, to the machine. The machine gives us the output. Now, we cross verify the output given by the machine with the actual output of the data and check for its accuracy. While checking for accuracy if we are not satisfied with the model, we tweak the algorithm to give us the precise output or at least somewhere close to the actual output. Once we are satisfied with the model, we then feed the data to the model so that it can predict the weather forecast for the year 2020.

With more and more sets of data being fed into the system, the output becomes more and more precise.

Well, none of the algorithms can be 100 percent correct. None of the machines have been able to attain 100 percent efficiency as well. Hence, the output we receive from the machine is never 100 percent correct.

An Engineer.ai Assembly line for apps

Conventional thinking says that one needs to know coding or be an engineer to create an application. Engineer.ai proves it otherwise, getting Artificial Intelligence (AI) to do the job, or at least most of it. Says Sachin Dev Duggal, CEO and founder of Engineer.ai, “I am an engineer and many like me don’t want to do repetitive codes like Facebook login. We have to utilise engineers to do the important things—like the logic and flow of an application and actually thinking through a customer’s problem,” he explains.

Engineer.ai treats app creation as an assembly line production process. When an app needs to be designed, the majority of it is done in the first couple of hours by the AI on his platform. And then, software engineers (from a workforce of 26,000) work on the little parts remaining to complete the app (like how technicians fix a car’s chassis, engine and wheels in a car assembly line), thereby leaving the repetitive work to AI and focusing on the creative parts that actually need human attention. The AI in Engineer.ai platform, called the Builder, draws from a library of ‘Components’ to build the repetitive blocks which have already been built before.

sachin duggal

Some 60% of software is ‘Components’ which need not be done again. This could be Facebook login or integration with an analytics provider,” says Sachin Duggal. The rest 40% is business logic and design. To do this, Engineer.ai partners with a number of software companies from whom developers are brought on board, depending on the complexity and features of the project/apps that need to be delivered. The developers’ time do not overlap with their original employers.

Engineer.ai, CEO Sachin Dev Duggal said budget encourages skill development

As per Engineer.ai, CEO Sachin Dev Duggal "The budget presented encourages skill development across the country, and especially within the tech industry--it’s a well grounded approach to propel India towards a $5 trillion economy. The focus on modern technologies like big data, VR, 3D printing, AI and IoT which will not only provide job opportunities for metropolitan urbanites living in the biggest cities, but also those in rural areas, as well. The proposal of 20 tech incubators in the agro sector along with the allocation of Rs.400 cr for higher education institutes to transform them into innovation labs is a clear indication about the kind of informed, technically equipped resources India is set to enable for the coming, ever-growing technology-driven industries.
